Just kicking off this thread for trip reports of great rides close to Canberra.
Keep the black stuff stuck to the tarmac and enjoy the ride.

Wee Jasper Road

Postby okz00k » Tue Dec 20, 2011 1:03 pm

Saturday morning's weather wasn't overly welcoming, however, by 10am the odd spot of sun was peeking through. I set off at the appointed time, but since I wanted to be home for lunch, decided to head up the Barton Hwy through Yass and on to Wee Jasper.

The Yass Shire only recently completed sealing the last 32km from Mountain Creek through Wee Jasper and on to Fitzpatrick's Creek reserve. I discovered this road the day after I got the bike registered and figured it was just what I needed to clear the cobwebs.

Most of the Wee Jasper Road from Yass is clear and open with a few interesting sweepers and then a great set of twisties descending down to the Murrumbudgee River. After crossing at the Murrumbidgee bridge it's an uneventful 10km to Mountain Creek, and then the real fun begins. The 32km of newly sealed road from here to Wee Jasper has it all - tight twisties, long open high speed sweepers and occasional long straights - with enough little surprises to keep the adrenalin pumping. Plus fantastic scenery for your pillion passenger.

The twisties ascending from Mountain Creek are truly magnificent - would be even better if they were closed to on-coming traffic ;-( so the right turns are a little slower ;-)

When you get up to the top the world of sweepers opens up - it's so hard to keep the FJR down to the 100kph legal speed (so why bother).

The final 5km descent to Wee Jasper is well worth taking at a leisurely pace to enable you to take in the view.

Fitzpatrick Creek reserve is a pleasant place for a picnic before heading back to home.
