National Veteran Motorcycle rally

Just back from a week at the bi-annual National Rally. The venue was the Barossa Valley, and we were based at Nuriootpa. The local Tourist park is a great venue for such things, and virtually all participants stayed there, whether camping, caravanning, or in a cabin. The Barossa is just a picture this time of year, and we only had one day of miserable weather the whole time.
For those unfamiliar with the definitions, Veteran ( in Australia)means manufactured prior to the end of 1918. So the youngest of these bikes is 99 years old. The interest with veterans, as opposed to Vintage, is that it is the era when they were still trying to work out where the motorcycle was going, design -wise, and there were many different approaches. Many of these are direct drive, no clutch or gearbox, a majority were still belt drive. The more advanced were sprouting clutches of one form or another, and there were some multi-speed gearboxes. Brakes were always minimal. Carburetion was still completely manual, with separate levers for mixture and throttle, start was mostly by pedal, and of course, spark was magneto-driven with manual advance. Motors could be as big as 1200cc. Not easy to ride, particularly if you have become accustomed to the luxury of functional brakes.
By the mid 1920's, the modern motorcycle had appeared. Multi-plate clutches driven off the countershaft with a separate gearbox, controlled from a handlebar lever, twistgrip throttles, and more or less functional braking at both ends.
My ride was a 1915 Lewis, Australian made. 770cc precision v-twin, three speed gearbox/clutch in the rear hub, and no brakes to speak of. Well, that is to say, it has the rim type with a rubber block polishing it. Nickel-plating an assembly which gets sprayed with oil the moment you move off makes for less than optimal friction  The venue, with my ride in the foreground.

Thanks Ralph. I've added some of these pics to my desktop pics folder - a random pic flashes up every hour, so these will be a treat!
